This is how we make our frames for all of our wood art projects! Chris came up with this method and it creates the perfect frame (of any size) for around $1. Incredible, right?
This frame method can be used to create frames for any size art or project. It is easy and inexpensive. Once you are comfortable with the process these are easy and quick to produce.
To start you need a 2×4 that is the length of the four sides of your artwork combined.
Example – if your back board for your wood art measures 8” by 10” you need the sum of the length of the sides plus the width of the frame (2” in this case). Add more than you think you need as we will trim the length to size later.
8” + 2” + 8” + 2” +10” + 2” +10” + 2” = 44”
- Using a table saw, trim one long edge of the 2×4” to give a clean square edge.
- Cut the 2×4 into ¾” slats using your table saw.
- Now we will cut a groove to hold the backboard of the wood art into one slat. Start in the middle of the wide side of the slat and cut a ¼” groove with the table saw. The depth of the groove depends on the depth of the inset you want for your wood art.
- Repeat step 3 over and over until the groove is wide enough to hold your wood art.
- Use a mitre saw to cut a 45 degree angle at either end of 2 opposite sides of your wood art. Remember your angles will be going in the opposite direction on each end of your piece. Make sure it is long enough (maybe even add a little … we add ¼”) we will fine tune the length in the final frame fit.
- Place the two pieces on your wood art and measure the distance between for the length of your other two frame pieces. Again, leave a little extra!
- Dry fit all four sides of your frame on your wood art. Make any adjustments needed. If your corners need adjustments just take off a bit put it back together until you are happy with the fit.
- Once the frame is the proper fit, sand the pieces well and finish. You can use stain, paint, wax the possibilities are endless!
- Once you are happy with the frame put glue on in the groove on one piece of the frame and inset the wood art. Then add glue to the mitre corners and add your next piece of the frame. Add glue to groove on each piece of the frame.
- Once your frame is glued together use a brad nail to secure the corners.
- Add your hanging hardware and you are done!
